Around 120,000 Australians have type 1 diabetes. They require insulin by injection several times a day, but even then, long-term complications can include kidney and heart disease, vision loss and nerve damage.<\/p>\n

Professor Philip O’Connell<\/strong>, Executive Director of\u00a0The Westmead Institute for Medical Research<\/strong>\u00a0(WIMR), is internationally recognised as a pioneer in the field of\u00a0islet transplantation<\/strong>, having delivered Australia’s first clinical trial after more than a decade of research.<\/p>\n

In theory, islet transplantation involves taking healthy islet cells from a donor and transplanting them into a recipient’s pancreas. In practice, it gives hope to patients with type 1 diabetes.<\/p>\n
