{"id":2782,"date":"2018-07-23T22:12:44","date_gmt":"2018-07-23T12:12:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wimr.org.au\/?post_type=wimr_news&#038;p=2782"},"modified":"2024-09-30T18:26:29","modified_gmt":"2024-09-30T08:26:29","slug":"exercise-cuts-risk-of-chronic-disease-in-older-adults","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/wimr.org.au\/news\/exercise-cuts-risk-of-chronic-disease-in-older-adults\/","title":{"rendered":"Exercise cuts risk of chronic disease in older adults"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">New research has shown that older adults who exercised above current recommended levels were twice as likely to avoid health conditions, such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes, and be in optimal physical and mental shape.<\/p>\n<p>New research has shown that older adults who exercise above current recommended levels have a reduced risk of developing chronic disease compared with those who do not exercise.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research interviewed more than 1,500 Australian adults aged over 50 and followed them over a 10-year period.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caption\">\n<p><figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/shutterstock_80916238.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Older adults who did the most exercise were twice as likely to be disease-free and fully functional<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/figure>\n<p>People who engaged in the highest levels of total physical activity were twice as likely to avoid stroke, heart disease, angina, cancer and type 2 diabetes, and be in optimal physical and mental shape 10 years later, experts found.<\/p>\n<p>Lead Researcher Associate Professor Bamini Gopinath from the University of Sydney said the data showed that adults who did more than 5000 metabolic equivalent minutes (MET minutes) each week saw the greatest reduction in the risk of chronic disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEssentially we found that older adults who did the most exercise were twice as likely to be disease-free and fully functional,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur study showed that high levels of physical activity increase the likelihood of surviving an extra 10 years free from chronic diseases, mental impairment and disability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the World Health Organization recommends at least 600 MET minutes of physical activity each week.\u00a0 That is equivalent to 150 minutes of brisk walking or 75 minutes of running.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith aging demographics in most countries, a major challenge is how to increase the quality and years of healthy life,\u201d Associate Professor Gopinath said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur findings suggest that physical activity levels need to be several times higher than what the World Health Organization currently recommends to significantly reduce the risk of chronic disease.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caption\">\n<p><figure style=\"width: 390px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/old-couple-walking.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"390\" height=\"259\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Older Australians are encouraged to do more exercise.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSome older adults may not be able to engage in vigorous activity or high levels of physical activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we encourage older adults who are inactive to do some physical activity, and those who currently only engage in moderate exercise to incorporate more vigorous activity where possible,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n<p>The research compiled data from the Blue Mountains Eye Study, a benchmark population-based study that started in 1992.<\/p>\n<p>It is one of the world\u2019s largest epidemiology studies, measuring diet and lifestyle factors against health outcomes and a range of chronic diseases.<\/p>\n<p>The full paper is available online at Nature Scientific Reports:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-018-28526-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-018-28526-3\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New research has shown that older adults who exercised above current recommended levels were twice as likely to avoid health conditions, such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes, and be in optimal physical and mental shape.
