{"id":2651,"date":"2017-09-14T17:54:01","date_gmt":"2017-09-14T07:54:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wimr.org.au\/?post_type=wimr_news&#038;p=2651"},"modified":"2024-09-30T18:26:33","modified_gmt":"2024-09-30T08:26:33","slug":"new-knowledge-on-how-hiv-beats-the-bodys-early-immune-response","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/wimr.org.au\/news\/new-knowledge-on-how-hiv-beats-the-bodys-early-immune-response\/","title":{"rendered":"New knowledge on how HIV beats the body\u2019s early immune response"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">In an important step towards eradicating HIV-associated viral reservoirs, researchers have identified how the HIV virus hijacks the innate immune system to facilitate its replication and spread, thus gaining a foothold infection in the body.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caption\">\n<p><figure style=\"width: 720px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Najla-and-Tony.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"406\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr Najla Nasr with senior author Professor Tony Cunningham<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/figure>\n<p>The findings, published in the Journal of Virology, show how HIV induces antiviral interferon stimulated genes in the absence of interferon production.<\/p>\n<p>Lead author of the study, Dr Najla Nasr said it\u2019s like a prize fight, with both HIV and the body\u2019s immune response both fighting for supremacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen a person is infected with HIV, the virus infects immune cells and knocks out the body\u2019s interferon production; the first line of defence in our bodies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen interferon production is inhibited, the virus infects adjacent cells and spreads throughout the body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurprisingly, we found that although HIV inhibits interferon production it also stimulates more than twenty antiviral interferon-stimulated genes\u2014or ISGs\u2014in its key target cells. This is the largest effect yet shown by any individual virus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cISGs are critical for controlling virus infections. They provide the earliest protective response to counter invading pathogens, but paradoxically they can also contribute to virus persistence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor its own survival advantage, HIV induces these genes in order to survive and spread throughout the body,\u201d Dr Nasr explained.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Nasr said the ultimate goal of this research was to understand how these antiviral genes are induced and thus coming up with strategies to boost their expression so that the virus replication is not just slowed but completely stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The Journal of Virology is ranked as the top journal exploring the nature of viruses.<\/p>\n<p>The full research paper is available under PMID: 28768867<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In an important step towards eradicating HIV-associated viral reservoirs, researchers have identified how the HIV virus hijacks the innate immune system to facilitate its replication and spread, thus gaining a foothold infection in the body.
