{"id":2587,"date":"2016-07-01T16:34:12","date_gmt":"2016-07-01T06:34:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wimr.org.au\/?post_type=wimr_news&#038;p=2587"},"modified":"2024-09-30T18:26:32","modified_gmt":"2024-09-30T08:26:32","slug":"multimillion-dollar-grant-to-boost-australias-response-to-infectious-disease-outbreaks","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/wimr.org.au\/news\/multimillion-dollar-grant-to-boost-australias-response-to-infectious-disease-outbreaks\/","title":{"rendered":"Multimillion dollar grant to boost Australia\u2019s response to infectious disease outbreaks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">Improving Australia\u2019s emergency response to infectious diseases through a national research effort is the focus of a new $5 million National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Centre of Research Excellence (CRE).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caption\">\n<p><figure style=\"width: 333px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Stachybotrys.jpg\" alt=\"Infectious disease stachybotrys\" width=\"333\" height=\"378\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stachybotrys<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/figure>\n<p>The Australian Partnership for Preparedness Research on Infectious Diseases Emergencies (APPRISE) will bring together Australia\u2019s leading experts in clinical, laboratory and public health research to address the key components required for a rapid and effective emergency response to infectious diseases.<\/p>\n<p>One of APPRISE\u2019s Chief Investigators, Professor Tania Sorrell, who is Director of the Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology at The Westmead Institute and of the Marie Bashir Institute for Infectious Diseases and Biosecurity at the University of Sydney, echoed Chief Investigator Professor Sharon Lewin from the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity in Melbourne, in saying that the new CRE would ensure Australia is equipped for a more coordinated, effective and evidence-based response to infectious disease outbreaks.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"quote\"><p>\u201cTo ensure national and regional health security, emergency responses to infectious diseases must be highly effective, coordinated and based on the best available evidence,\u201d Professor Sorrell said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cResearch coordination, adaptable research protocols and efficient, secure data sharing are needed to develop a strong evidence base for preparedness, response and recovery from such events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis national consortium, with engagement of key animal health, community and international collaborators, will focus on the major infectious diseases threats including influenza, coronaviruses, hemorrhagic viral diseases, arboviruses, novel pathogens and antimicrobial resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Westmead and Marie Bashir Institutes will collaborate with the Doherty Institute and multiple organisations around Australia to create a truly national network.<\/p>\n<p>Research projects will include infection prevention in primary care, hospital and critical care services; public health surveillance platforms and protocols; rapid diagnostics, biomarkers and biobanking; and the needs of key populations including Indigenous Australians, and the Asia-Pacific region.<\/p>\n<p>NHMRC Chief Executive Officer, Professor Anne Kelso said the new Centre would play an important role in Australia\u2019s readiness to respond to future pandemics and other infectious disease emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHistory tells us that new infectious diseases will continue to emerge but that we cannot predict when, where or how.
