\nmost prestigious architecture prizes \u2013 the Sulman Medal for Public Architecture.<\/p>\n
The Westmead Millennium Institute for Medical Research has been awarded one of Australia\u2019s
\nmost prestigious architecture prizes \u2013 the Sulman Medal for Public Architecture.
\nProject Principal, Julian Ashton of BVN Architects, accompanied by the Institute\u2019s Chief
\nOperating Officer Mark Dado, accepted the top prize at the NSW Architecture Awards held at
\nSydney Town Hall last night.<\/p>\n
Officially opened in October 2014, the new Westmead Millennium Institute building was
\ndescribed by the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) jury as \u201ca project where every aspect
\nhas been considered\u201d.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThe sensitivity and deftness of this consideration has transformed the building\u2019s logic into an
\nuplifting and inspiring environment for collaboration and research.\u201d
\nThe jury also praised the enduring quality of the building\u2019s palette of materials which created a
\n\u201cbeguiling sense of well-being.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\nAccording to Julian Ashton \u201cThe Westmead Millennium Institute takes laboratory design away
\nfrom dark internally focused spaces into light filled areas with significant exterior glazing
\nallowing views outside and a great deal more daylight in the laboratory than in traditional
\nlaboratory design.\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cA central stair connects the laboratories, which together with shared write up and common
\nspaces, enables researchers to meet and collaborate far more freely than previously,\u201d he said.
\nThe Westmead Millennium Institute is one of Australia\u2019s largest and most productive medical
\nresearch centres. It is home to more than 380 medical researchers and support staff and is
\ninternationally recognized for ground-breaking work into infectious and immune diseases;
\ncancer and leukaemia; liver and metabolic diseases; eye and brain-related disorders and heart
\nand respiratory diseases.<\/p>\nThe Executive Director of the Institute, Professor Tony Cunningham, said the building makes
\nresearchers feel valued.<\/p>\n\u201cThe new building is beautiful and uplifting. I\u2019m thrilled that the Australian Institute of Architects
\nhas, with this great honour, recognised the very positive effects the building is having on our
\nstaff and visitors.
\n\u201cIt was also designed around our people – their need for interaction and collaboration \u2013 and has
\nenhanced our productivity.\u201d<\/p>\nCOO Mark Dado said the award showed that the architects had successfully delivered on the
\nInstitute\u2019s vision.<\/p>\n\u201cThe Sulman Medal is testimony to a successful collaboration between the Institute, architects
\nBVN, our builders Abigroup and Cockram, and Project Managers Capital Insight.
\n\u201cOver the 12 months we have occupied the building it has met all the expectations of our staff
\nand in some respects exceeded them. It has been highly successful.\u201d<\/p>\nThe Sulman Medal is Australia\u2019s longest-running architecture prize having first been awarded in
\n1932. It is a measure of the award\u2019s high standards that the AIA has in several years declined to
\nmake the award, judging no building worthy of the medal.<\/p>\nAmong the previous winners of the medal are the Sydney Opera House, Grosvenor Place, the
\nMLC Centre Martin Place and the Olympic Park Railway Station.<\/p>\nWith the 2015 award, BVN has become the first architecture practice to win eight Sulman
