These projects exemplify that intent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research in areas such as heart disease, dwarfism, antimicrobial resistance, immunology and haematology addresses major health challenges globally, and it is a&nbsp;clear&nbsp;endorsement of our researchers,&nbsp;and our&nbsp;strong&nbsp;partnerships with hospital and university colleagues,&nbsp;that this work continues to attract NHMRC support.\u201d said Professor O\u2019Connell.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congratulations to the&nbsp;following&nbsp;three&nbsp;WIMR&nbsp;investigators,&nbsp;and their teams,&nbsp;who&nbsp;succeeded in&nbsp;securing&nbsp;NHMRC Ideas Grants as lead investigators:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wimr.org.au\/researchers\/a-professor-eddy-kizana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Professor Eddy Kizana<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>Project: Definitive and Personalised Therapy for Genetic Heart Disease&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professor&nbsp;Kizana&nbsp;is a cardiologist at Westmead Hospital who has developed a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wimr.org.au\/research-groups\/cardiac-gene-therapy-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research program<\/a>&nbsp;at&nbsp;The&nbsp;Westmead Institute for Medical Research using gene therapy technology for the treatment of cardiac disease in humans.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>The research program consists of&nbsp;the development of&nbsp;vector technology and the application of this&nbsp;in pre-clinical models of human disease. The research is translational and highly collaborative.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congratulations&nbsp;also&nbsp;to&nbsp;the&nbsp;additional&nbsp;two&nbsp;co-investigators&nbsp;on the project,&nbsp;Dr Dhanya Ravindran and Dr Ivy Chiang,&nbsp;from Eddy\u2019s team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wimr.org.au\/researchers\/associate-professor-aaron-schindeler\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Associate Professor Aaron Schindeler<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>Project: Gene therapy to correct achondroplasia (dwarfism)&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>A\/Prof Aaron&nbsp;Schindeler&nbsp;is the&nbsp;Head of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wimr.org.au\/research-groups\/bioengineering-and-molecular-medicine-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bioengineering &amp; Molecular Medicine<\/a>&nbsp;laboratory&nbsp;at WIMR and&nbsp;an Associate Professor with&nbsp;the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a recognised leader in genetic skeletal disorders, he is now leading the development of a novel gene therapy for achondroplasia&nbsp;(dwarfism)&nbsp;designed to address the underlying cause of the condition in early childhood and deliver lasting clinical benefit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congratulations also to&nbsp;the&nbsp;other&nbsp;additional&nbsp;co-investigator&nbsp;on the project,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wimr.org.au\/researchers\/alexandra-odonohue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Alexandra O&#8217;Donohue<\/a>, from Aaron\u2019s&nbsp;team.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wimr.org.au\/researchers\/dr-muhammad-kamruzzaman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Dr (Kamal) Muhammad Kamruzzaman<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>Project: Novel probiotic plasmids to protect microbiota from invasion by antimicrobial resistance&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Muhammad&nbsp;Kamruzzaman&nbsp;(Kamal), a Research Scientist at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wimr.org.au\/research-centres\/centre-for-infectious-diseases-and-microbiology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology<\/a>, at WIMR and a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney, is a leading researcher in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and plasmid biology. He pioneered a novel plasmid-based approach to eradicate AMR, successfully&nbsp;demonstrated&nbsp;in preclinical models and now progressing to&nbsp;first-in-human trials.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congratulations to the&nbsp;additional&nbsp;co-investigator on the project,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wimr.org.au\/researchers\/professor-jon-iredell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Professor Jon Iredell<\/a>,&nbsp;from the&nbsp;Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congratulations to the following two WIMR investigators who succeeded in securing NHMRC Ideas Grants as co-investigators with teams&nbsp;led by researchers at partner institutions:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wimr.org.au\/researchers\/dr-kerrie-sandgren\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Kerrie Sandgren<\/a>, co-leader of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wimr.org.au\/research-groups\/vaccines-and-adjuvants-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vaccines and Adjuvants Group<\/a>&nbsp;at WIMR<strong>,<\/strong>&nbsp;is&nbsp;a&nbsp;partnering Chief&nbsp;Investigator&nbsp;with&nbsp;a team led by&nbsp;Assoc Prof Gila Moalem-Taylor&nbsp;from the University of New South Wales,&nbsp;on a successful grant&nbsp;titled \u2018Decoding neuroimmune crosstalk in lymph nodes: a new frontier in peripheral neuropathy\u2019.&nbsp;\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wimr.org.au\/researchers\/professor-david-gottlieb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Professor&nbsp;David Gottlieb<\/a>,&nbsp;&nbsp;co-leader of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wimr.org.au\/research-groups\/blood-transplant-cell-therapies-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blood Transplant &amp;
