But experiencing this firsthand, I\u2019ve realized how important it is. It\u2019s improved my quality of life significantly. Without the research, transplants and procedures like mine wouldn\u2019t exist.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p><em>\u201cResearch is critical. It\u2019s what enables groundbreaking advancements. Fifty years from now, the challenges I faced will likely be much easier for others.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7209be2 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"7209be2\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e8fe3b1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e8fe3b1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In 2007, Ray Zhou was diagnosed with IgA nephropathy, a condition where his immune system mistakenly attacked his kidneys. Over time, his kidney function declined\u2014from 100% to just 3% by early 2024. By then, dialysis was inevitable.<\/p><p>Ray\u2019s journey took a turning point in 2015, when he was referred to Professor Natasha Rogers at Westmead Hospital. From that moment, she became his dedicated clinician, guiding him through the difficult years leading up to his transplant.<\/p><p>In March 2024, Ray was on the brink of a pre-dialysis transplant, but at the last moment, the opportunity fell through. He had to begin dialysis, continuing for six months before finally receiving a successful kidney transplant on September 17th.Now, three months post-surgery, he is off dialysis, regaining his strength, and getting back to exercise.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a96a393 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a96a393\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How Natasha Rogers\u2019 research shaped Ray\u2019s care<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da3e744 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"da3e744\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Ray\u2019s care at Westmead Hospital was directly informed by the cutting-edge transplant research conducted by Professor Rogers and her team at The Westmead Institute for Medical Research (WIMR). Their work focuses on minimising rejection, improving transplant longevity, and reducing complications\u2014all of which have been critical to Ray\u2019s post-transplant recovery.<\/p><p>One of the key areas of research that influenced Ray\u2019s care is transplant monitoring and immunosuppression management. After a kidney transplant, up to 20% of patients experience rejection, which can significantly shorten the life of the transplanted organ. The challenge is balancing immunosuppressive therapy\u2014too little can lead to rejection, while too much increases the risk of life-threatening infections, cancer, and cardiovascular disease.<\/p><p>Ray\u2019s post-transplant care was directly shaped by insights from Professor Rogers\u2019 research into these risks. Currently, diagnosing rejection requires an invasive kidney biopsy, which carries risks such as bleeding and infection.<\/p><p>Professor Rogers\u2019 team is developing a new blood test that would allow same-day detection of transplant rejection, making monitoring safer, faster, and more precise. When Ray saw a Channel 7 news segment featuring this research, he asked how he could be involved.
